Day 38 Leaving Haapasaari
We anchored for the night in the official anchorage in close proximity to the rocks, you are never far away from rocks in Finland, even in open water. We decided to travel about 40 miles to break the journey to Helsinki into two manageable halves. First we decided to go ashore and visit the island and shop.
The shop was small but well stocked and we managed to get most of the essential except ice-cream and tissues. (I think they did have ice-cream but Linda decided to strike it from the list).
I selected a lovely looking anchorage from the Cruising Association website reports made by another cruiser. The route is circuitous as you really have to travel in the marked safe channels. We were really lucky as the wind was in the perfect direction for 90% of the way and so we more or less sailed the entire route.
Just as we were about to arrive I took out my iPad for a more detailed chart and disaster it says that there is less than 1m in the entrance. I started to look for alternative places to go… but then I went back to the CA site to check the report, the report was very clear so I told Linda we were going to approach slowly as I did not believe the charts. Indeed the charts were wrong there was not less than 5.5m in the entrance channel ad we draw 2.35 so plenty of water.
This anchorage has turned out to be the best place we have stopped so far it is stunning (I can't get photo's to show how lovely it is).
