Quiberon

Linda and I loved Quiberon and with it so close to Belle Isle we decided it was the perfect place to go take Ian and Gwyn. We had to leave early because there is a cill over which we must cross at high tide and as it was high tide around 9am that meant to needed to get moving around 7:30.

We entered the harbour and we were met by the harbour master's dory who asked us to wait for a departing boat before entering. So we circled for about ten minutes after which they said that the owner had gone for a shower, so we circled for another ten minutes. Then the boat left so we entered and I reversed the boat on to the pontoon. No sooner did we tie up but they asked us to move to another location which ironically had been free all along!

We had breakfast on board and then walked into the town as today was "Market Day" it seems that it is always market day somewhere and we are starting to recognise the same vendors in different ports but Quiberon was different, it was huge dwarfing the shops in the town.

We had lunch in a street side cafe and leisurely walk back to the boat. We then collected our beach towels and went to the beach for a swim. That evening we ate onboard.

Quiberon

We had been looking to returning to Quiberon as it was the place of our first summer holiday after getting married and we have fond memories. We liked it so much that we returned just after Richard's first birthday but have not been back since.

We left the anchorage on Houat at around 11am, we had intended to go to Quiberon first thing to maximise our time there but the harbour master made it clear we were not really welcome before 12. It took about an hour and twenty minutes to arrive and upon entering the harbour we were created by a dockmaster in a workboat. In spite of the fact that we had made a booking they had no idea we were coming and had no reserved space for us. We were offered a berth in the inner harbour through the lock. This is good and bad. Being locked in mens you are in a very protected part of the marina the down side is you are very restricted about when you can leave. We entered the harbour with no instructions about what side to put our fenders, the entrance through the lock was really narrow and once in side the space to manoeuvre was small. Of course the fenders were on the wrong side but for once I didn't mind, instead of Linda hastily changing all the lines and fenders from one side to another I decided to turn the boat around and just park it backwards into the space. This worked really well and once we had tied up we soon realised that we were in the old harbour with three restaurants and a very big crowd of people had watched our entry and docking. This turned out to be the best place in the whole marina to be notwithstanding the inconvenience of the lock. That evening we went for a walk along frontage to the point.

The next day we decided to go into the town and we soon found the terrible hotel where we stayed. It was not easy to spot because it has been turned into apartments and is no longer a hotel. The centre of Quiberon is lovely it has lots of charm for a popular holiday town, it is more like Bournmouth than Bogner, it is beautifully set out with wonderful granite paving, everything looks so clean. That evening we had a great meal in the old harbour overlooking our boat.

We went to our favourite beach the next day and as we walked along a back road there was a boarded up house with a huge fig tree overhanging the pavement full of ripe figs, Linda would return later to lighten the load. Our lunch was almost completely ruined as the wind came in picked up the sand and everything including our baguettes we covered. After about an hour we could not stand any more and Linda found us a new spot at the other end of the beach which was totally protected.

In the evening we returned to the same restaurant because the fish I had had the night before was so good Linda wanted to have it. Tomorrow we leave fore the Morbihan.
