What are we doing?

Quiberon 2025

In the middle of the night the wind swung to the north which was not welcome and increased in strength. We knew it was likely to happen but it was not clear if it would be north or north East etc etc. There is an anchorage which is protected from the north east and we stayed there many nights last year but it is open to the west and the wind and swell had been coming from the west and when we passed that anchorage not a single boat was anchored there which is almost a record for August. At about 6-7am I had had enough and we went around to the other anchorage and … it was now full. We couldn't find a spot and what a good job because it wasn't settled at all. I looked at the map and saw an anchorage just off the main land we pulled out the sails and we were off. What a difference, it was smooth calm and so lovely we could have stayed al day but we had by this time booked a spot in the marina in Quiberon.

We arrived in Quiberon at 14:30 the sill opened at 12:30 so by the time we arrived boats were starting to come in, it is a bit like the witching hour. I went straight to our favourite restaurant to see if we could get a table, no chance she said and what's more they are fully booked for a week. I returned to the boat and Linda said I shoull ask to go on the waiting list so I took her one of our boat cards and asked her to give me a call if a table came available. Sure enough we were in and so happy. Two hours later the feeling had changed as the meal was a huge disappointment and worse they didn't even bring us the wine to have with our meal.

The next day it was lovely and I said to Linda would you like to stay a third day she jumped almost with joy, Linda loves Quiberon… there is one condition I said we have to recover the steering wheel. So we spent the day fixing things we took turns to recover the wheel, it took more than four hours of sewing to do it. It looks great now but we made a few mistakes and honestly I would like to do it all again but I am not sure I have an other 4 hours to spare. Once you start you can't move the boat until you are finished so if we did this in the Hamble it is a lot of effort and effectively a day out of a weekend. We will probably live with it. The day was really productive, I cleaned the windows with some professional window cleaner that JR gave to us, it was so got I decided to clean the windows inside… one spray and I nearly choked, my nostrils eyes and throat we all attacked, this was clearly good stuff but only for external use! (In my own defence the instructions were in every European language except English!).

The next day the weather was grey and miserable, we realised we should have gone to the beach yesterday and done the jobs on this day. We walked into town and had lunch at a quayside restaurant. We ordered a bottle of wine which raised the waiters eyes (are they allowed to judge us?). After lunch we went on our merry way back to the boat and as we did the skies cleared and wind dropped and so we decided we would go one of the small beaches near the marina.

Today (9th) we will depart on the afternoons tide so we got up early made a packed lunch and went to the beach near the Sofitel hotel. This was the beach we went to for the first holiday after we were married. It was magical, it was warm, no wind clear seas (but so cold) and with a vivid blue sky. This was the best time we have had at a beach in years, why did we leave?
