Day 33 The Peterhof
Without a shadow of a doubt this was our best day in Russia. The WCC had organised a coach to take us all to The Peterhof Palace. This is an amazing example of brilliant engineering. St Petersburg was built on a swamp at huge human cost as so many lives were lost during its build. Consequently St Petersburg is very flat, somehow 300 years ago someone was very inspired to local the only hill in the vicinity and to build a palace on it but not only that but to use natural water pressure created using gravity. As a result all the fountains at the Peterhof are generated without any power at all. The engineers did not have pipes so used hollowed out trees to make the pipes and by reducing the dimeter as they went on were able to build up sufficient pressure to drive the water fountains.
