Day 40 Helsinki
Helsinki is a marvellous place, once we stepped ashore the first place our guide took us was the old market which had been changed into a food hall.
Linda was excited as Richard and Charlotte were in the air and due to arrive at the end of our tour.
The tour took us to the main sights of Helsinki and our guide gave us the most brilliant history and flavour of the country. The funniest thing was the story about the fort. Every Finn goes to school and has to learn a song and the sing goes blah blah blah hurrah hurrah hurrah… Boom Boom Boom etc etc
It translates to the British are attacking the fort hurray hurray hurray, boom boom boom!
Apparently during the Crimean war we sent 300 ships to attack the fort in Helsinki and all the resident of Helsinki went down to the beach to watch the fireworks! Apparently the fort was not really used and it was quite a spectacle.
