Day 4 Tarbet - Campbeltown

We had planned to sail down the eastern side of Kintyre and anchor at Sanda Island overnight and then have an early start in the morning to pass around the Mull and the tides would start to be favourable around 3am. As it happens the weather forecast was for a force 5-6 that evening so we decided to shorten the journey and head into Campbeltown and what a good decision that was.

I called the harbour master ahead and asked for a berth and he coned off a large area of the pier so that there would be room for us. Campbeltown was beautiful and as we had only decided to come that morning there was no chance of a restaurant that evening. The harbour is well protected from just about all directions and the quality of the housing that surrounds the harbour is second to none. There are huge victorian or Edwardian and made of granite they look like they will still look the same in three hundred years, stunning is the word.

Campbeltown's claim to fame is the stunning lighthouse which has been built on a small island at the entrance to the harbour. This island has a small track/road that covers and uncovers with the tide so you can walk out to see it but you have to be mindful not to get cut off by the tide or you will be hanging around for six hours. This Island is where famously Paul McCartney filmed the song "Mull of Kintyre" which was a huge hit in the UK on release.
