What are we doing?

Day 29 Leaving Tallinn

Today we are leaving for Russia, but before we can go we have to "check-out". This is nonsense, I don't understand the requirement for it. I understand checking in but out I don't get. The problem is Russia is over 200 miles and so is a long sail and we are anxious to go… The border police do not turn up until midday putting us three hours behind schedule. It is a real shame as we wanted to anchor somewhere on the way.

In the end we left and headed for Russia, we decided to stop at Vergi, it is a tiny port with a concrete wall and a couple of pontoons. I called in advance to make sure that we could fit in…"come" she said so we did. The water was very shallow with less than 1m beneath the keel. My fear was that the wall would be taken and there is no plan B.

We had a decent sail and had the spinnaker up for a while until a wind shift so we furled it away. As we approached the narrow entrance channel the spinnaker partially unfurled so I had to do a complete u-turn and take it down before entry. This allowed Crystal Venture to go ahead. They decided to also break the journey at Vergi and so we had invited them on-board for Pizza on arrival.

As we approached the wall it was clear that the wall was going to tower over the boat so Linda at the ready with her bad knee was lightly relieved to see Andrew bounding along to take our lines.

A nice evening was spent in the saloon until the mosquitos came out and we had to shut everything up. At this point the cabin became so hot the evening ended. I had completely forgotten that we have air-conditioning.

  • On our way
  • The point.
